Egads I'm glad I don't live in a Democracy!!
I'm opinionated, but not very political by nature. No, I'm not going to stump for McCain or Obama. Instead, I came to the realization that a Democracy wouldn't work any better than a Communism. On paper they're both great theories, but in practice they just don't work. I won't get into why Communism won't work because we've seen the results of the great Soviet experiement (which granted wasn't quite Communism, but its close enough for government work). Democracy is a whole different beast though.
In theory, all citizens in a Democracy would vote on every issue. I don't see the technical and general productivity issues involved in every citizens taking time out of their day to vote on every issue as being that big a hurddle. I mean pretty much everyone has a cell phone, and it will only be a matter of time until it is either wired directly into our brain or somehow so intimately integrated that we'll have one national gestalt.
No, the real reason Democracy won't work is because of money. On any vote there will be at least two sides: a side for and a side against. One of those sides will have more money than the other. That greater wealth will buy more advertising, and obviously advertising is effective, so the wealthier side would tend to win more often. This is no longer a Democracy.
Oh sure, we could try to make all kinds laws that would give all parties equal media time (kind of a National Issues Channel thing), but who would ever pay attention to a 24 hour political ad channel? Besides there'd still be some equivalent of 529 groups or something similar that feigned independance but really had a hidden agenda sneaking their messages into mainstream media. But can you blame them? Some of these issues would involve billions of dollars, and if by spending a few tens of millions on ads supporting a 700 billion dollar economic bailout, wouldn't it be worth it? Can you imagine Goldman-Sachs or Lehman Brothers NOT spending money trying to sway your opinion??
Thank God I'm not living in a Democracy.
