Adding Images to Your Custom WhyPark Template
One of the problems I have when creating a template for one of my WhyPark sites is coming up with neatly formatted and optimized images to use in my template. I used to try to find an existng template with an image I liked and then reformat the template to suit my mood. Now I know better.
First let's look at the image options WhyPark tells you about. If you go to the customized layout section of your site's settings, then click the View Placeholders link (http://www.whypark.com/sites/placeholders.cfm), you'll see the following 3 image options:
Insert the default small image for your site's category |
| [[imgHeader]] |
Insert the default header image for your site's theme or category |
| [[imgMedium]] |
Insert the dynamic 385x261 image |
The [[image]] placeholder provides an image that is 201 by 152 pixels in size. The [[imgHeader]] image is 572 by 174 pixels.
This is fine if you only want that one image, but if you want more than one image, what are you to do? Where do you find them? Well, we could host our image elsewhere and hotlink to it, but where's the fun in taht? I mean, we're trying to hack WhyPark here to get squeeze the absolute most out of this service.
If you look closer at these images, you'll find that they are stored on a WhyPark owned domain: wpimg.com. This domain is used to host all the images used by the WhyPark templates. The images hosted at this domain are segregated into directories by type. As far as I've found, these subdirectories are:
The stock images used by WhyPark templates |
| http://www.wpimg.com/a |
WhyPark template images |
Some other WhyPark template images |
Yet moreWhyPark template images |
The only thing I'm aware of in this directory is the gradient used in the background of the search box. |
| http://wpimg.com/social |
The social media bookmark images and the RSS feed image. |
| http://www.wpimg.com/custom |
These are custom images uploaded by other customer. DO NOT STEAL IMAGES! |
If we delve further into the pk subdirectory we can find:
The default small image |
The default header image |
The dynamic image |
So what good does knowing this do me? Well...if you use Google Image Search and use the search engine command "inurl:", you can get a nice listing of images available to you. For example, check this out: http://www.google.com/images?q=inurl%3Awww.wpimg.com. Now you can add a few different images to your template like this:
or
As an added bonus, you'll find a nice listing of other sites hosted with WhyPark. Take some time to look at these other sites because you may find new and interesting ways to utilize your WhyPark account.
